PORTLAND, ORE., March 14, 2018 – Nuggets Night, Portland’s annual tribute to the golden age of garage rock, has announced the musical lineup and nonprofit beneficiary for this year’s event. Nuggets Night 2018 will bring 19 local and national bands to the Mission Theater for two nights of music on June 1-2.
The event will be headlined be Love Revisited, featuring Johnny Echols of Love with Baby Lemonade, performing the band’s seminal album “Forever Changes” in its entirety plus many popular Love hits. Other performers include Nuggets Night favorites like the Pynnacles, the Reverberations, The Verner Pantons, The Mean Reds, The Hauer Things and The Lovesores, with first-time appearances by The Bugs, Hurry Up, Planet Damn, The Von Howlers, Black Fruit and more.
“There’s special songs that have lasted 50 years of time and been passed on to new generations,” says Terry Currier, owner of Music Millenium. “It’s great to see bands, especially younger bands, in Portland embrace these songs and bring them back to life.”
Nuggets Night 2018 will benefit the volunteer-run Queer Rock Camp Portland (QRC PDX), an empowering summer camp that engages LGBTQ youth ages 12-23 in musical self-expression. The weeklong camp creates opportunities for at-risk young people to pick up instruments for the first time, attend social justice workshops, form bands and write original music, culminating in a triumphant showcase concert.
“The youth served by QRC PDX face some of the toughest conditions in our community,” says Nuggets Night co-organizer Julie Madsen. “Most of their families can’t afford music lessons or other summer camps, and some have even lost parental support after coming out. By connecting these kids to the therapeutic benefits of music, QRC PDX can make a real difference in their lives.”
Now in its 11th year, Nuggets Night remains the only event of its kind nationwide and is a highlight of Portland’s summer music calendar for both audience members and performers. The concert has grown from a single evening at the now-closed Slabtown to a two-night extravaganza supported by national headliners. Throughout it all, two elements have remained constant: a desire to preserve obscure rock & roll gems from the 1960s and beyond, and a commitment to giving back to Portland’s musical community.
“Every year, it feels vital to use this event to support the things we believe in and the people we care about,” adds Madsen. “We couldn’t be prouder to bring awareness to QRC PDX’s work through Nuggets Night. I hope every one of those kids starts a band and changes the shape and identity of music. That’s what rock & roll is all about.”
